😉If you asked me to pick up a bottle of Sauv Blanc before my wine journey started I would have totally shown up with a bottle from New Zealand. The grape might have its ancestral home in France but this tiny 2-island country really put Sauvignon Blanc on the map

🤓The country first got serious about Sauv Blanc in 1975 but 10 years later is when we really started to see a boom in plantings across the country. An outbreak of phylloxera coupled with a government lead campaign to pull out less common Müller-Thurgau and Chenin Blanc primed Sauvignon Blanc to rise exponentially
.
🍷Wineries like villamariawines and kimcrawfordwine became leaders in spreading the New Zealand wine gospel globally. Both companies were also part of the handful of first wineries to move their portfolios to screw caps!
.
🤓Both wineries came from humble beginnings into household names. With Villa Maria starting in Auckland by George Fistonich in the 60s and Kim Crawford originally as a virtual winery started by Kim and Erica Crawford in 90s

🍇Marlborough seemed to capture both estates, the region broke the virtual nature of Crawford and was the second winery location for Villa Maria where both wineries continued to make the quaffable wines that we have all become familiar with

🍷Family wineries bottling up a legacy in New Zealand

🤓New World wine regions are always thought of, well, new! BUT family-run multigeneration wineries buck that comment. Today I am diving into 2 family-owned wineries in Marlborough babichwines and saintclairwine
.
🍇Babich is a winery part of the fabric of New Zealand wine. Celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2016 the winery has made wines from vineyards in Auckland, Hawke's Bay, and in 1991 making their first Marlborough Sauv Blanc. Spanning 3 generations and counting!
.
🍷Their 2020 vintage Sauvignon Blanc is part of the Classics Series. The wine is sustainably certified and in the glass, the wine is beautifully perfumed with notes of passionfruit, mandarin orange, tarragon and great florality. On the palate, the wine is mouth-filling with a bright and long finish
.
🍇Next up is Saint Clair Family Estate. The winery was started and is still owned by Neal and Judy Ibbotson, who established themselves in Marlborough in the late 70s. Their pioneering spirit really relates to the name of the winery; named after James Sinclair who first settled the property. The winery today is run by their children and the wines are made by a stellar winemaking team. Made up of Hamish Clark, Kyle Thompson and Stewart Maclennan

🍷In the glass, their 2019 Sauv Blanc is very inviting. The wine is filled with aromas of quince, blackcurrant, a mix of ripe citrus notes, and that classic Sauv Blanc herbaceousness.
On the palate, the wine is dry and lean with a razor edge acidity and a balance in the glass.

Diese Rebsorte gehört zu den am häufigsten angebauten der Weinwelt und genießt daher natürlich auch weltweite Bekanntheit.
Der Name "Sauvignon" wird von Wissenschaftlern auf das französische „sauvage“ - zu deutsch „wild“ - zurückgeführt.
Was mich bei meiner Recherche jedoch stutzig gemacht hat, ist die unterschiedliche Informationslage über die Herkunft des Sauvignon Blanc. Laut einigen Quellen ist sie eine natürliche Kreuzung aus den Rebsorten Traminer und Chenin Blanc - andere wiederum schreiben, dass Chenin Blanc in diesem Zusammenhang wohl bereits widerlegt wurde.. 🧐

With a nice blend of 60% Sauvignon blanc, 25% Petit Manseng, 10% Traminer and a splash of Semillon from the Maremma - Tuscany region.
We enjoyed this in Magnum style a while ago at the 2 Michelin star restaurant brut_172

The name of Fattoria Le Pupille has nothing to do with the eyes of the owner, because "pupil" means in Tuscan parlance as much as "hill". On one of the numerous elevations of the Maremma near Istia d'In the early 1980s, Elisabetta Geppetti, mother of five children, took over an abandoned farmhouse with a manor house east of Grosseto and restored it in the typical Tuscan style. The winemaker and art historian is full of energy and joie de vivre. With her wines produced at Fattoria Le Pupille, she has not only created a masterpiece that combines tradition with modernity, but has also made a declaration of love for the region that came to be honoured late.
About the wine:
Vinification: Soft pressing, maceration for few hours at low temperatures, alcoholic fermentation. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation takes place for one third of the total. Maturation: 5 months in steel tanks except for the Petit Manseng, which ferments for 25 days in new tonneaux where then it’s aged for 3 months. The big wood enhances the flavors and supports the tannic element, typical of this vine. Petit Manseng gives a fuller body and a greater aromatic scent.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a bright citrus yellow color with golden reflections.
On the medium(+) nose aromas of citrus, apple and pear with hints of tropical fruit, blossom, honey and light vanilla.
On the palate dry, medium bodied with medium(+) acidity and nice freshness. Fresh and round in the mouth with a medium length finish.

Im Mund elegant, weich und ausgewogen mit spürbarem Tannin. In der Nase wiederum vereinen sich Waldbeeren und Cassisnoten mit grünen Aromen wie Kräuter, grüne Paprika, Minze - und auch Zedernholz.
Er wächst auf unseren besten Sonnenlagen und wurzelt in tiefgründigen Böden nahe dem Winzerdorf Rhodt. Es handelt sich hierbei um ein mehrfach selektioniertes und ertragsreduziertes Lesegut. Die Trauben wurden zudem auf der Maische vergoren und der Wein reifte im Holzfrass.
Und wie es der Zufall will, eignet sich dieser Topwein ideal zu Gegrilltem!

p.s. Amerikanische Forscher schätzen übrigens, dass sie aus einer natürlichen Kreuzung von Sauvignon Blanc und Cabernet Franc entstanden ist. Daher wohl auch die grünen Aromen, die sowohl den Weißwein Sauvignon Blanc als auch dem Rotwein Cabernet Sauvignon so einzigartig und unverkennbar machen.
